What is a Reiki Master?

In the world of holistic and alternative healing, the term "Reiki Master" carries an air of mystique. However, Often envisioned as a beacon of healing energy and spiritual insight, a Reiki Master is a key figure in the practice of Reiki. But what exactly is a Reiki Master, and what role do they play in this Japanese energy healing practice? In this blog post, we'll delve into the realm of Reiki Masters, uncovering their responsibilities and journeys.
Please note that while "Reiki Master" is the most commonly used word to describe the highest level of training a Reiki practitioner can receive, it is not ElizaBeth's favorite word to use for many reasons. We prefer to say "Reiki Master Practitioner," as it honors that even at the highest levels of training, Reiki is still an active practice in which teachers are very much still learning and evolving too.
The Evolution of a Reiki Practitioner to a Reiki Master Practitioner
A Reiki Master Practitioner is an individual who has not only mastered the techniques of Reiki healing but has also achieved a deep understanding of its philosophy and principles, and maintained a consistent and active practice.
While different Reiki lineages and trainings structure their practices uniquely, generally the journey from a Reiki practitioner to a Reiki Master Practitioner is a transformative one that involves dedicated study, practice, and personal growth.
-
Initiation and Attunement: A Reiki practitioner typically progresses through three levels of Reiki training: Reiki Level 1, Reiki Level 2, and Reiki Master Level. At each level, the practitioner receives attunements, which are sacred energy transmissions from a Reiki Master. These attunements, called "Reiju" which means blessings, enhance the practitioner's ability to channel and work with Reiki energy.
-
Mastering Techniques: As practitioners advance through the levels, they learn and refine various Reiki techniques, including hands-on healing, distance healing, and meditation and focusing techniques. These techniques form the foundation of their healing practice.
-
Deepening Spiritual Connection: Becoming a Reiki Master involves not just the consistent practice and mastery of techniques but also a deepening of the practitioner's connection to subtle energy. This often includes a greater understanding of the metaphysical aspects of energy, consciousness, and the interconnectedness of all things.
ElizaBeth's journey to becoming a Reiki Master Practitioner took place over the course of 7 years. While paths may be unique from person to person, it is generally recommended that Reiki practitioners take time to integrate and practice the teachings from each level. Traditionally in Japan, it was the teacher (Reiki Master Practitioner) that determined when the student was ready for the next level training, only once they had demonstrated both a commitment to their practice and an understanding of the Reiki system.
ElizaBeth completed Reiki I in 2015, and Reiki II in 2016. In 2020, she deepened her Reiki studies under a new teacher and completed Reiki I & Reiki II again. In 2021, ElizaBeth became a Reiki Master Practitioner after a 8-day immersive retreat and training experience. With over 21 days of immersive Reiki trainings, and 9 years in practice, ElizaBeth began training new practitioners in Reiki in 2023. To learn more about Reiki trainings with ElizaBeth, click here
Responsibilities of a Reiki Master Practitioner
Reiki Master Practitioners hold a unique and vital role in the Reiki community:
-
Teaching and Attunements: One of the primary responsibilities of a Reiki Master Practitioner is to guide and train aspiring Reiki practitioners. They conduct classes in which attunements, or Reiju are given, passing on the knowledge, blessings and energy needed to practice Reiki effectively.
-
Mentorship and Guidance: Reiki Master Practitioners serve as mentors, offering guidance to their students as they progress on their healing journeys. This may involve addressing questions, providing insights, and offering emotional support.
-
Continued Personal Growth: A Reiki Master Practitioner's journey is never complete. They continue to evolve, learn, and deepen their understanding of Reiki and its broader implications.
Conclusion
A Reiki Master Practitioner embodies the essence of Reiki's teachings, offering not only healing energy but also wisdom, guidance, and a transformative journey. Through their dedication, Reiki Master Practitioners may illuminate the path of healing, leading others to discover the power of energy, focus and intention. Whether seeking to become a Reiki Master Practitioner or benefiting from their guidance, the role they play in the system of Reiki is vital.
